South East Archaeology Pty Limited has provided services in Aboriginal archaeology and heritage throughout eastern Australia for the past 20 years. Under the guidance of its Director, Peter Kuskie, over 250 Aboriginal heritage assessment projects have been completed within NSW, Queensland, Victoria, ACT, Northern Territory and South Australia.

Our goal is to assist our clients in complying with relevant legislative requirements through high quality, professional, timely and cost-effective service.

Our clients include:

Leading Australian and international corporations (eg. BHP Billiton);

Environmental management and engineering firms (eg. GHD);

Governments and government agencies (eg. RTA, State Forests of NSW, Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH), and various Local Government Authorities);

Aboriginal communities (various Local Aboriginal Land Councils and Tribal Councils); and

Numerous locally based proponents of residential, tourism, extractive industry, landfill and pipeline projects.

South East Archaeology Pty Limited has extensive experience in:

Conducting surface surveys, test excavations and salvage excavations in relation to Environmental Impact Assessment (including Part 3A and Part 4 State Significant Development) requirements;

Preparation of the Aboriginal heritage components of Environmental Management Plans and Environmental Impact Statements;

Preparation of OEH Section 90 Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit applications and assessments;

Aboriginal community consultation; and

Monitoring of construction.

Major projects completed include:

Part 3A assessment of the Australian Rail Track Corporation's 32 kilometre Maitland to Minimbah and 11 kilometre Minimbah to Wittingham rail upgrades in the Hunter Valley, involving surveys and mitigation measures (Hunter 8 Alliance);

Survey and extensive salvage excavations at the 37 square kilometre Mount Arthur North Coal Mine, Hunter Valley (URS Australia, BHP Billiton);

Part 3A assessment of Ulan Coal Mine's Continued Operations Project near Mudgee, involving extensive survey of a 50 square kilometre area over 21 weeks, with over 900 Aboriginal sites recorded (UCML/Xstrata);

Optus Communications' mobile telecommunications network throughout NSW and Queensland and fibre optic cable network from Sydney to Brisbane and Cootamundra to Canberra (Optus Communications);

Survey of the 740 kilometre long Eastern Gas Pipeline, from Longford, Victoria, to Wilton, NSW (Eastern Gas Pipeline Project Ltd); and

Numerous salvage and test excavation assessments throughout NSW, particularly in the Hunter Valley, Mid-North Coast, South Coast, Central Tablelands and Southern Highlands.

South East Archaeology maintains an excellent working relationship with many Aboriginal communities throughout eastern Australia and a commitment to working in partnership with Aboriginal people in investigating and managing their heritage.
